Walter Model The German troops invloved in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 were part of Army Group "B" under General Walter Model. and OKW Reserves. Model's tenacious style of fighting and aggressive personality won him plaudits from Hitler, who considered him one of his best field commanders According to wikipedia although he was a hard-driving, aggressive panzer commander early in the war, Model became best known as a practitioner of defensive warfare. His success at the head of the 9th army in the defensive battles of 1941–1942 determined his future career path.

German forces:

  • In the first line stood Army Group "B" :
    - Reserve
    - Troops Attached
    - 5th Panzer Army (Manteuffel)
    - 6th Panzer Army (Dietrich)
    - 7th Army (Brandenberger)
    - 15th Army (Zangen)
  • In the second line were OKW reserves.

    OKW Reserves

The OKW (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht) was the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces.
It had nominal oversight over the Army (Heer), Navy (Kriegsmarine), and the Air Forces (Luftwaffe).
OKW was subordinate to Adolf Hitler.
Officially, the OKW served as the general staff, coordinating the efforts of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
In practice, it acted as Hitler's personal staff, translating his ideas into military orders, and issuing them
to the three services while having little control over them.
During the war, however, the OKW found itself exercising increasing amounts of direct command authority,
particularly on the Western Front. By 1942 the OKW held the command of Western Front, in North Africa,
and in Italy, while the Army (Heer, OKH) exercised de facto command of the Eastern Front.

Several divisions and smaller units from the OKW reserve were on alert or actually en route to form the second line.

    NOTES:

    Volksgrenadier in winter 1944 [1]
    Volksgrenadier Divisions.
They were formed in the Autumn of 1944 around small cadres of veterans,
and then bulked out with the men of the Replacement Army. According to wikipedia,
"jobless" personnel of the shrinking Navy and Air Force, wounded soldiers from
broken formations returning to duty from hospitals, older men who would have
been considered too old or too unfit for the peacetime army and teenagers were
    recruited into the ranks.
The Volksgrenadier Division used only six infantry battalions instead of the normal
    nine for infantry division
    — already a common reality for many existing divisions.
Some volksgrenadier divisions fought well, while others performed very poorly.
Several divisions, especially those made up of personnel drawn from the Navy and
Air Force often displayed high motivation and morale.

    [2]
    Panzer Pioneer Company.
It had the Goliath, a miniature tracked vehicle for the purpose of carrying a minimum of
50 kg of explosives. The vehicle was steered remotely via a joystick control box. According
to wikipedia the single-use weapon was not considered a success due to the high cost,
low speed, poor ground clearance, vulnerable command cables and thin armour. The Goliath
did help lay the foundation for post-war advances in remote-controlled vehicle technologies.

    [3]
    "East" Battalion.
It consisted of "volunteers" from all over Eastern Europe and Russia
many of which were captured during the Germans campaigns in 1941-1942.
Others were actual volunteers, who allied with the Germans in hopes to see
the end of the Soviet Union.

    [4]
    Panzerjagers.
The panzerjagers operated anti-tank artillery, and made exclusive use of the tank destroyers.
Battalions used by armies and corps were used to protect most likely avenues of tank attacks.
Divisions would often position their panzerjägers on the flanks, or use them to support infantry
    against enemy using tanks.

    [5]
    Volks-Werfer Artillery
    (rocket launchers).
After the crew had loaded and aimed the rocket launcher, they had to take cover 10 metres
away to avoid the exhaust flames, and would fire the rockets with an electric switch.
After firing, however, a long streak of smoke was visible from a considerable distance,
leaving the launcher vulnerable to counter-battery fire. It was therefore necessary to
relocate the launcher as soon as possible after firing. The loud, shrill howling noise
of the incoming rockets led Allied soldiers to give it the nicknames "Screaming Mimi."

    Sturmgeschutz IV [6]
    Sturmgeschutz, StuG
    (assault gun)
It was an armored vehicle built on the chassis of the tank. Initially it was intended to
provide fire support to the infantry to destroy bunkers, and other entrenched positions.
After some improvements the turretless StuG proved to be an effective tank destroyer.
Not only was its gun powerful enough to knock out the enemy tanks, the increased armour
plating combined with its low silhoutte made it a difficult vehicle to destroy.
The crews placed a lot of emphasis on accurate gunnery. Hence the presence of an artillery-style
periscopic sight capable of twice as much magnification as the sights mounted in the tanks.
The StuG III became Germany's most produced armored fighting vehicle during the war.
The StuG IV assault gun became known as an effective tank killer. Both StuG models were
transitioned to a tank destroyer role in the German retreats following the Battle of Kursk.

    [7]
    Jagdpanzer 38(t), or Hetzer "Chaser"
    (light tank destroyer)
Hetzer It was based on a modified Czechoslovakian tank 38(t) chassis and became one of the most
common late-war German tank destroyers. It was available in large numbers and was mechanically
reliable. Its small size made it easier to conceal than larger vehicles. A self-propelled gun
such as this was not intended for a typical Wehrmacht blitzkrieg style of warfare. Instead,
a light self-propelled gun like the Jagdpanzer 38(t) excelled when emplaced along pre-determined
lines of sight where the enemy was expected to approach and when used in defensive positions
to support a prepared ambush. Its fully enclosed armor protection made it a safer vehicle
to crew than the open-topped Marder.
